SUNHOSE · BUYER GUIDE
Steel Wire vs Layflat Hose for Pump Lines
Steel wire reinforced PVC hose and PVC layflat hose serve different purchasing needs in a pump system. Start by identifying the inlet and discharge sections, then select each hose against its model data and operating conditions. A shared nominal size does not make the two constructions interchangeable.
Identify the section of the pump line
Describe the hose location before requesting a quote: source to pump inlet, or pump outlet to the delivery point. Include the medium, temperature, required flow, route length, elevation changes and connections. The inlet and discharge sections can have different requirements even when they connect to the same pump.
The PVC steel wire hose catalog describes a transparent PVC tube with spiral steel wire reinforcement and suction/delivery applications. The PVC layflat hose catalog describes textile reinforcement and a hose that lies flat when empty. These descriptions explain the construction; the selected model and application assessment determine suitability.
Compare construction and ordering questions
| Buying question | PVC steel wire hose | PVC layflat hose |
|---|---|---|
| What reinforces it? | Spiral steel wire in the PVC wall. | Textile reinforcement in a flexible PVC construction. |
| What dimensions are listed? | Nominal size, ID and OD by model. | Nominal size, ID and wall thickness by model. |
| How is it supplied in the model table? | Coil length varies by model. | Coil length varies by model and grade. |
| What should be checked for an inlet line? | The required vacuum rating and conditions for the exact model. | Do not infer suction suitability from the discharge pressure table. |
| What should be checked for an outlet line? | Working pressure, conditions and connection compatibility. | Working pressure, grade, conditions and connection compatibility. |
| What should the handling plan cover? | Coil dimensions, bend limits and the supported route. | Deployment, draining, roll storage and the supported route. |
The steel wire table does not publish a vacuum rating for every model. Wire reinforcement alone therefore cannot establish a vacuum limit. Ask for the required inlet conditions to be reviewed and for the applicable model documentation. For layflat hose, use a documented suction-suitable alternative where the installation requires it.
A two-inch label hides different model details
These examples come from the published Sunhose model tables. The figures are catalog data for individual items, not a combined recommendation or a claim of equivalent performance.
| Field | Steel wire SHSS5056 | Steel wire SHSS5062 | Layflat SH40051 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominal size | 2" | 2" | 2" |
| Inside diameter | 50 mm | 50 mm | 51 mm |
| Outside diameter | 56 mm | 62 mm | Not listed in this model table |
| Wall thickness | Not listed as a separate field | Not listed as a separate field | 1.0 mm |
| Coil length | 50 m | 50 m | 100 m |
| Working pressure | 3 bar | 5 bar | 4 bar |
| Burst pressure | 9 bar | 15 bar | 12 bar |
| Listed mass | 0.89 kg/m | 1.60 kg/m | 0.22 kg/m |
The steel wire rows have the same internal diameter but different OD, mass and pressure values. The layflat example uses a different listed ID despite sharing the nominal two-inch label. Request the fitting dimensions and assembly specification for each selected hose rather than transferring the same coupling or clamp specification between them.
Sources: steel wire hose model table and layflat hose model table. Catalog burst pressure is not the permitted operating pressure. Use the operating conditions and complete assembly specification when evaluating pressure requirements.
Compare the route, storage and handling requirements
A buyer should describe the route rather than specify only its straight-line length. Identify corners, fixed equipment, unsupported spans and any traffic or abrasion exposure. Ask for the applicable minimum bend radius where the installation needs it. Do not infer a bend radius from the wire appearance, or use a flattened storage width as the working internal diameter.
For a portable discharge line, record how the hose will be deployed, drained, moved and stored between uses. For a fixed inlet line, record the connections and support arrangement as well as the required inlet conditions. The shipping package also matters: request actual packed dimensions and weight for the selected coil lengths. The mass-per-metre column is not a packed-weight certificate.
Choose a pressure grade by model
The word “heavy duty” is not a substitute for a pressure value. Compare the relevant standard, medium-duty or heavy-duty layflat model for the intended conditions. State the maximum operating pressure and any surge or pulsation the system may impose, and ask how the proposed assembly is rated for that service.
If you are comparing another construction such as PVC spiral suction hose or rubber suction/discharge hose, apply the same worksheet. The product family name cannot settle media compatibility, operating temperature or the connection design.
Prepare an RFQ for both sides of the pump
Put inlet and outlet items on separate lines. For each item provide:
- Location in the system and the intended medium.
- Model or required ID, OD or thickness, and dimensional tolerances.
- Required length, quantity, supply format and end connections.
- Operating temperature, pressure and applicable inlet vacuum requirements.
- Route, movement, bending and environmental conditions.
- Packing, marking, inspection and destination-document requirements.
Ask for MOQ, sample availability, lead time, payment and shipping terms for the exact configuration. These are quotation items; neither this comparison nor a generic family page establishes a universal commercial commitment.
Questions buyers often ask
Can layflat discharge hose replace the pump inlet hose?
Do not assume that it can. The published discharge working-pressure value does not establish a vacuum rating or suction suitability. Specify the inlet duty separately.
Is every steel wire hose rated for the same vacuum?
No common rating is published in the referenced model table. Request the rating and conditions applicable to the proposed model instead of selecting by appearance.
Can the same two-inch fitting be used for all three example rows?
The nominal label alone is insufficient. Actual hose dimensions, coupling details and the attachment method must be matched for the assembly.
Is a longer coil automatically cheaper to deliver?
Not necessarily. Compare the actual packing dimensions, weights and shipment scope in the quote. Coil length is only one part of the logistics calculation.
